Balcony is Hell

My townhouse balcony is big...and dirty...and likely hotter than the firey pits of hell when the sun is on it.

So this weekend, I am taking what little savings I have that isn't meant for retirement and I'm going to create an outside room if it kills me. I have asked a friend to help...Sandra has a knack for creating these lovely peaceful spaces and I can only hope that if she helps me I might be able to retain some of that karma in the space for a little while. I think I'll borrow the digital camera from my folks for some before and afters.

I do have a few rules about my balcony. The first one is: NO LIVE VEGETATION. There are a few reasons for this:
1. It is so hot out there that most anything burns anyway.
2. The local wildlife - and my cats - have a way with soil that spells doom for the poor defenseless plants.
3. And this is the most important one: I can't keep a cactus alive. There, I admitted it.

My next rule: Outdoor carpetting. The floor gets too hot to stand on...and it gets really really dirty. It would be easier to have something out there that I can vaccuum than a hard surface that builds up gunk.

So that's it...weekend knitting plans are shot. But I admit that I have this fantasy that my balcony is so rocking that I can knit outside in comfort and shade.

...
you're going to VACCUUM OUTSIDE?!? try "something outside that I can hose down" or "slosh with a bucket of water (or coffee dregs) now and then". Or is it just me that thinks Persona Girl is the only woman who would vaccuum her outdoor patio more than once every 4 years?
...admittedly this is from the woman who is considering astroturf instead of carpet in her home, for the same reasons you listed... and who is trying to figure out how to fit in time to vaccuum the INSIDE before your visit.
